Virtual Production Specialist

Smit Vrajlal Tarpara is a Virtual Production Specialist at Florida State University’s College of Motion Picture Arts. His work focuses on immersive cinematic storytelling, real-time technologies, and reliable virtual production environments. He works at the intersection of creative production and technical infrastructure, helping filmmakers use LED volumes and real-time workflows with confidence.

He specializes in end-to-end virtual production pipelines, including LED stage configuration, networking, media servers, real-time rendering, camera tracking, and system optimization. His technical experience includes Unreal Engine, Disguise, LED wall systems, and camera tracking technologies. He has helped build virtual production environments from the ground up, integrating hardware and software systems to support stable and efficient on-set workflows.

Before joining FSU, he worked at Arizona State University as a Technical Assistant in AV/IT at the Media and Immersive Experience (MIX) Center and as a Film Equipment Assistant. He supported virtual production and immersive media projects using Unreal Engine, Disguise, Pixera, and QLab while preparing and distributing equipment for students and faculty.

He earned a Master of Science in Media Arts and Sciences with a specialization in Extended Reality Technology from Arizona State University. His research interests lie in innovating new real-time workflows within the virtual production ecosystem that can make film production more efficient, reliable, and adaptable within studio environments, including potential innovations in AI-assisted content creation, real-time adaptive environments, lighting systems, volumetric capture, digital humans, and sustainable studio practices. In addition to his technical work, he is committed to education and mentorship. At FSU, he works closely with film students on FSU’s Virtual Production Stage, helping them understand both the creative possibilities and the technical principles behind real-time filmmaking. His teaching emphasizes the balance between creative intuition, technical discipline, and collaborative problem-solving in contemporary film production.
