Jed Kaleko

Filmmaker in Residence

After 12 years of scenic construction, design, acting, and directing in theater in the South East U.S., Jed decided to fulfill a childhood dream to be a filmmaker. Jed attended FSU’s Graduate Program from 1993 to 1995, where he designed the set for Trinity and oversaw construction of several sets. He was also honored by the administration and his cohort by having the opportunity to direct The Pit and serve as DP for Paul McCall during his final year of graduate school. With his skillset and knowledge about scenic design and all things stage and set, the Film School offered Jed a job overseeing the stages in their new facility in Tallahassee upon graduation and he took a faculty member position the following year. Since August 1995, Jed has taught classes in Production Design, Directing, Cinematography, and has overseen production at every level BFA and MFA.

Jed believes that every story told in any medium can be seen as a descendant of the long history of storytelling and encourages his students to find the DNA of their story and fully understand its place in the larger universe of STORY as a way of looking for deeper meanings and themes. Jed has designed one feature film, Roses, since becoming FSU faculty, served as DP for a VH1 featured music video, and directed a one-act for the FSU Theater School. He also continues to develop screenplays for a possible project to direct in the future. He and his wife, Talley, were married in 1994 and have three grown children all still living in Tallahassee.
