Alessandro Soares, ACE
Editor in Residence
Alessandro Soares, ACE is a Brazilian-American filmmaker, educator, journalist and cinephile. With a professional film and TV editing career nearing two decades, Alessandro has cut on most formats: Long-form film and television narratives and documentaries, short films and docs, reality, MVs, trailers and sizzles. The bulk of his career has been in long-form television, and his clientele includes ABC, Apple, CNN, History, Hulu, MGM, Netflix, Paramount, PBS and Showtime. His film work has gone to major film festivals such as South by Southwest, Tribeca and Hot Docs. He’s a proud active member of the American Cinema Editors honorary society and is a multiple Emmy nominee, having won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2019 for his editing on the CNN hosted doc series United Shades of America. He was most recently nominated in the 2026 News and Documentary Emmy Awards for the Hulu/ABC News True Crime doc series The Fox Hollow Murders: Playground of a Serial Killer.
Alessandro was born in Salvador, Brazil, where he lived into his early adulthood. A cinephile from a very early age, he wrote film criticism for Brazilian newspapers while still a teenager, and went on to study Journalism/Communication, the closest major to film available there at the time. After earning his bachelor’s, he took a job as a news reporter for Globo Network. Dissatisfied, he applied to FSU’s College of Motion Picture Arts MFA program in 1999, a transformative decision and a defining experience that kickstarted the filmmaking career path he’d always dreamed of.
