As the motion picture industry continues to broaden use of digital art techniques, Florida State University has designed an innovative Bachelor of Fine Arts degree focused on Animation and Digital Arts. The curriculum explores the evolution of filmmaking from live action production to enhanced storytelling through emerging tools and practices.
Recognizing that technological innovations are only instruments to better serve the story, the Animation and Digital Arts program is built on a film school model, equipping you with a foundation in traditional filmmaking while instilling the fundamentals of advanced digital art practices and aesthetics that will allow you to continue the evolution of storytelling.
Your studies in Animation and Digital Arts begin with the college’s core curriculum of film history, screenwriting, directing, cinematography, CG and live action production, editing and sound. Your art will then be refined as you learn the craft of digital filmmaking through the likes of modeling, compositing, character development, 3D animation, stop motion, visual effects cinematography, texturing and rendering.
From the dark, fantasy world of Pan’s Labyrinth, to the vast expanse of Master and Commander, the timeless tale of Hugo, the endearing beauty of The Little Mermaid or the character development of the Jake and Daxter video game series, our faculty are dedicated to sharing their industry experience and passion with you while passing on the conventions and revolutions of the digital arts in film. Learn more about our faculty.
The culmination of the college’s hands-on, project-based curriculum is your senior thesis project, a capstone film where you will have a year dedicated to development, production and post-production. Our students draw upon knowledge of digital arts approaches to enrich their thesis film and are free to choose the direction of their film, whether that be animation, live action or CG production. The College of Motion Picture Arts equation of small student cohorts, a project based curriculum, experienced educators and a commitment to storytelling has led several of our students to Student Oscar and Emmy Award recognition for their thesis films.
