Apply for the BFA in Production

Admission Requirements for the Bachelor of Fine Arts - Production Program

Thank you for your interest in the FSU College of Motion Picture Arts. Admission into the college is highly selective; please take your time to carefully complete the application for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Production program.

In order to begin, you must have the FSUSN that was assigned to you by the FSU Office of Admissions when you submitted your general university application.  If you do not have an FSUSN, you will first need to apply to FSU to be assigned one.  Click here to begin that application.

NOTE: The admissions process for both freshmen and transfers is complete for the Fall of 2014.  The next available admissions window will be for the Fall of 2015.

Both an FSU general application and a College of Motion Picture Arts application will need to be completed and submitted for admission consideration to the College of Motion Picture Arts.  The College of Motion Picture Arts application includes:

  • Online Application Form
  • Résumé – Your opportunity to share your experience, including but not limited to: education, employment, extra–curricular activities, creative endeavors, sports, hobbies, travel, and service work.
  • Statement of purpose - A 500 to 1,000 word essay describing your creative influences, personal objectives and future career goals – in short, your motivation for applying to this program and why you want to be a filmmaker.
  • Writing sample - A two-page non-dialogue scene about a person trying  to kill a spider in his/her home. The scene should be considered the opening for a screenplay or theatrical work. Writing samples should be typed in 12-point Courier in standard play or screenplay format. The length indicated is the maximum allowed.
  • Three letters of recommendation - The online application requests that you enter names and email addresses for the individuals who will be writing letters on your behalf. Then the online application sends those individuals a request that they return their letters on your behalf directly to our online application via a link that we provide. All letters must be received by October 16, 2013. Note that recommenders will not receive an email request link until you have filled out your entire application and submitted all documents. Please allow at least two weeks for those submitting letters on your behalf to respond.
  • Online portfolio (optional): A sample of your visual work can be presented by sharing one link on the online application to your personal website or a trusted third-party site. This link should go directly to the work you would like the Admissions Committee to consider and must be the applicant's original work. Your online portfolio can include a variety of art forms such as film, photography, illustrations and/or animations.  Film submissions can consist of short films or animated clips of up to 10 minutes, or the first 10 minutes of a feature-length film in which the applicant had primary creative control. Photography submissions should be limited to 15 images. Be thoughtful in your selections and choose your best material.

If you are applying to both the Animation and Digital Arts and Productions programs, an additional 500 word essay is required in which you should explain why you would like to be considered for both majors.

All materials must be submitted electronically by mid-October or your application will be incomplete and not reviewed by the admissions committee. Mailed or faxed materials will be not be accepted.

Transfer students are welcome to apply to the program.  Transfer students must complete at least 30 hours of liberal studies requirements before admission, to be completed prior to the start of fall classes.  If you have questions about which specific courses will transfer to FSU, you are welcome to contact Emily Burgess, our Undergraduate Advisor, at eburgess@film.fsu.edu.  Students that transfer with an A.A. degree from a Florida public institution have completed the liberal studies requirements.  An electronic version of Its All Academic can be found at http://undergrad.fsu.edu/Academic-Information/It-s-All-Academic, a publication we give to every student during Orientation that explains the Liberal Studies requirements at FSU.

A select number of applicants will be invited for mandatory on-campus interviews with the Motion Picture Arts admissions committee.  Those selected to interview for the Fall of 2014 will be notified at least 10 days prior to the interview session.  Interviews will take place from late February through March of 2014; specific dates have not yet been determined.

Please contact us if you have any questions regarding the Motion Picture Arts application process.
